Kinetic vs Microsoft Power Platform and Copilot Studio
Microsoft Power Platform (Power Apps, Power Automate and Copilot Studio) builds apps, automations and agents inside Microsoft's cloud, usually with data in Dataverse. Kinetic builds portals and workflows over Workday, SAP, ServiceNow or whatever holds the records, and can run customer-managed or air-gapped. Choose Power Platform for Microsoft 365 work. Choose Kinetic for processes across many systems.

Kinetic and Microsoft Power Platform, row by row
Every comparison on this site uses these rows, in this order. Where Microsoft Power Platform matches Kinetic or goes further, the table says so. Numbers in brackets point to the sources at the end of the page.
| Criterion | Kinetic | Microsoft Power Platform |
|---|---|---|
| Where the records live | In the systems you already run. ERP, HR, ITSM and case systems keep the records; Kinetic reads from them and writes to them. | Different approach Apps usually keep their data in Dataverse, which is licensed by capacity. Connectors reach other systems. Source [5] |
| What you build on it | Portals, forms and apps; the workflows behind them; and the connections to existing systems. One platform covers all three. | Similar to Kinetic Apps (Power Apps), automation (Power Automate) and agents (Copilot Studio), on one Microsoft platform. Source [1] Source [2] |
| How AI helps you build | An AI assistant creates and edits forms, portals and workflows through Kinetic's MCP server, which is generally available. | Similar to Kinetic Microsoft describes Power Platform as an AI platform to “build and scale intelligent apps, agents, and automation.” Source [1] |
| How a running process behaves | The workflow runs the same way every time. AI is a step inside it (classify, extract, recommend, summarize), not the thing deciding the route. | Similar to Kinetic Copilot Studio lets makers “mix agentic and traditional automation” in one process. Source [2] |
| AI model choice | Anthropic Claude, Amazon Bedrock, Azure OpenAI, self-hosted or open models, or any model that supports MCP. Kinetic ships no model of its own. | Partly similar Models come through Microsoft's services. In GCC and GCC High, Microsoft lists preview models for answer generation as unavailable. Source [4] |
| AI agents in the process | Agents can create records and start workflows through MCP and the APIs, within the user's permissions. Native agent work exchange is in development. | Partly similar Copilot Studio builds agents in the commercial cloud. In GCC and GCC High, triggers and autonomous agents are listed as unavailable. | Where it can run | Kinetic-hosted cloud, a customer-managed install, or an air-gapped network. | Different approach Microsoft's cloud: commercial, GCC, GCC High and DoD environments for Power Apps. Source [3] |
| Government deployment and sign-in | Deployed in DoD IL5 environments, for example at Army INSCOM. CAC/PIV sign-in, SSO through SAML and OIDC, and 20+ years serving defense and intelligence. | Microsoft Power Platform goes further Power Apps runs in GCC (FedRAMP High), GCC High and DoD. Copilot Studio GCC High aligns with DISA SRG IL4 and has a DISA provisional ATO. Third-party connectors fall outside Copilot Studio's US Government compliance commitments. Source [3] Source [4] |
| Licensing model | No per-user fees. Consumption-based, with a free Community Edition. | Different approach Per user, or pay-as-you-go per app, for Power Apps; per user or per bot for Power Automate; plus Dataverse capacity. Microsoft ended sales of the Per App plan to new customers in January 2026, per partner sources. Source [5] Source [6] Source [7] |
| Connecting to other systems | Connectors, APIs and MCP. If a system has an OpenAPI spec, Kinetic can connect to it. | Similar to Kinetic A large connector library, strongest across Microsoft 365 and Azure. Source [1] |
| Teams and Slack | Headless. There is no ready-made Teams or Slack app; customers build a plugin on the Kinetic API or use an MCP-capable assistant. | Microsoft Power Platform goes further Teams is native. Copilot Studio agents publish to Teams in commercial and GCC; Microsoft lists the Teams channel as unavailable in GCC High. Source [4] |
What Microsoft Power Platform does well
- It's already familiar. Staff build in tools they sign in to every day, with the identity and admin setup the organization already runs.
- Microsoft 365 and Teams. Apps and agents sit next to Outlook, SharePoint and Teams, where much office work already happens. Source [4]
- Analyst standing. Microsoft was a Leader in Gartner's 2025 Enterprise Low-Code Application Platforms Magic Quadrant and is included in the 2026 AI-Augmented Low-Code report. Source [8] Source [9]
- Government clouds. Power Apps is available in GCC (FedRAMP High), GCC High and DoD, and Copilot Studio in GCC and GCC High. Source [3] Source [4]
Where Kinetic is different
Your data stays in the systems that own it
A typical Power Apps build stores its data in Dataverse, priced as extra capacity.[5] That is sensible for Microsoft 365 work. For a process whose real records live in Workday, SAP or a state case system, it means keeping a second copy in step. Kinetic reads and writes those systems directly, so there is no second copy to reconcile.
Government limits are in Microsoft’s own documentation
Microsoft’s page for US Government Copilot Studio customers, updated October 15, 2026, lists “Triggers / Autonomous Agents” as unavailable in both GCC and GCC High, and the Teams channel as unavailable in GCC High. It also says third-party connectors may process data outside the US Government infrastructure and aren’t covered by its compliance commitments.[4]
Kinetic can run customer-managed or on an air-gapped network, with the AI model on the same network, and is deployed in DoD IL5 environments with CAC/PIV sign-in. If your agents and integrations have to stay inside one boundary, that is the comparison to test.
Where Power Platform is ahead
Teams. Power Platform is native to it, and Kinetic is headless: there’s no ready-made Teams app, so customers build a plugin on the Kinetic API or use an MCP-capable assistant. Microsoft also holds FedRAMP High for GCC; Kinetic is authorized by customers inside their own boundary instead.
Licensing for people without a Microsoft license
Power Apps is licensed per user or pay-as-you-go per app, Power Automate per user or per bot.[5][6] For staff who already hold the licenses, that cost may be sunk. For a portal serving residents or contractors, Kinetic’s model (no per-user fees, consumption-based) is usually easier to forecast.
Which to choose, and when to run both
Choose Microsoft Power Platform when
- The process lives in Microsoft 365: SharePoint lists, Outlook approvals, Teams.
- Your users are licensed staff, and the per-user cost is already paid.
- You need an agent inside Teams today and you're not in GCC High.
Choose Kinetic when
- The process touches Workday, SAP, ServiceNow or a case system as much as it touches Microsoft 365.
- The users include residents, clients or contractors who don't hold Microsoft licenses.
- You need customer-managed or air-gapped deployment, or AI steps on a model you host.
- You work in GCC or GCC High and need agents that start work on their own, which Copilot Studio lists as unavailable there.
Run both when
- Staff stay in Teams and Power Apps for Microsoft 365 work, and requests that cross other systems go to a Kinetic workflow through its API.
- You build a Teams plugin on the Kinetic API so people can start and track Kinetic requests from Teams.
U.S. Army INSCOM
25 hours to 12.5
INSCOM replaced an 85-page PDF recruiting packet with a Kinetic portal, deployed in a DoD IL5 environment with CAC sign-in. Recruiter admin time fell from 25 hours a week to 12.5.

-
Is Kinetic an alternative to Power Apps?
For apps that front several systems of record, or that serve people outside your Microsoft tenant, yes. For apps that live in SharePoint, Outlook and Teams, Power Apps is usually the better fit, and many organizations will run both.
-
Does Kinetic work with Microsoft Teams?
Not out of the box. Kinetic is headless, so customers build a Teams plugin against the Kinetic API or use an MCP-capable assistant. Power Platform's Teams integration is native, and on this point it is ahead.
-
Can Copilot Studio run autonomous agents in GCC High?
Microsoft's documentation, updated October 15, 2026, lists triggers and autonomous agents as unavailable in both GCC and GCC High. Check that page for changes before you plan around it.
-
Does Kinetic sign in with Entra ID?
Yes. Kinetic supports SSO through SAML and OIDC, which covers Entra ID and Okta, plus CAC/PIV sign-in for government users.
-
How does licensing compare?
Power Platform is licensed per user or per app, with Dataverse capacity on top and Copilot Studio metered in credits. Kinetic has no per-user fees, so people outside your Microsoft tenant don't add cost by being there. The pricing page explains the consumption model.
-
How do agencies authorize Kinetic?
Inside their own boundary. Kinetic runs customer-managed or air-gapped, and DoD customers install it in their own GovCloud environment, scan its containers and issue the ATO. It runs with ATOs in DoD IL4 and IL5 environments today, for example at Army INSCOM. Microsoft's government clouds carry their own authorizations, listed in the table above.
