Comparison
Kinetic vs Appian
Appian is a process automation platform with a data fabric, AI agents and strong government credentials, including FedRAMP High and a DoD IL5 provisional authorization. Kinetic builds portals and workflows that read and write your existing systems, charges nothing per user, and can run air-gapped. Choose Appian for a vendor-authorized cloud. Choose Kinetic to build on your own systems.

Kinetic and Appian, row by row
Every comparison on this site uses these rows, in this order. Where Appian matches Kinetic or goes further, the table says so. Numbers in brackets point to the sources at the end of the page.
| Criterion | Kinetic | Appian |
|---|---|---|
| Where the records live | In the systems you already run. ERP, HR, ITSM and case systems keep the records; Kinetic reads from them and writes to them. | Partly similar Appian's data fabric unifies data from other systems for use in Appian applications. Source [1] |
| What you build on it | Portals, forms and apps; the workflows behind them; and the connections to existing systems. One platform covers all three. | Similar to Kinetic Process applications, case management and workflows, with AI agents and people in the same process. Source [1] Source [7] |
| How AI helps you build | An AI assistant creates and edits forms, portals and workflows through Kinetic's MCP server, which is generally available. | Similar to Kinetic Appian ships developer MCP servers for Claude Code and Kiro, announced in April 2026. Source [2] |
| How a running process behaves | The workflow runs the same way every time. AI is a step inside it (classify, extract, recommend, summarize), not the thing deciding the route. | Similar to Kinetic Appian reports ranking #1 for “Deterministic Workflow Automation” in Gartner's 2026 Critical Capabilities for Business Orchestration and Automation Technologies. | AI model choice | Anthropic Claude, Amazon Bedrock, Azure OpenAI, self-hosted or open models, or any model that supports MCP. Kinetic ships no model of its own. | Appian meters AI by tokens per month in each tier. Ask Appian which models are available in its Government Cloud; we didn't find a published list. Source [7] |
| AI agents in the process | Agents can create records and start workflows through MCP and the APIs, within the user's permissions. Native agent work exchange is in development. | Similar to Kinetic MCP support in both directions since April 2026. Agents are available from the Advanced tier. Source [2] Source [7] |

What Appian does well
- Government credentials. Appian Government Cloud holds FedRAMP High and a DoD IL5 provisional authorization, which Kinetic does not claim. Source [5] Source [6]
- Analyst standing. Appian reports Leader placements in Gartner's 2025 Enterprise Low-Code Application Platforms Magic Quadrant and in the Business Orchestration and Automation Technologies Magic Quadrant in 2025 and 2026. Source [9] Source [10]
- Deterministic process. Appian reports a #1 ranking for deterministic workflow automation and for platform consolidation in Gartner's 2026 Critical Capabilities. Source [4]
- Process and AI in one place. Appian positions its platform to orchestrate AI agents, systems and people, and added MCP support in both directions in 2026. Source [1] Source [2]
- Reviewer standing. On PeerSpot's Appian vs Pega comparison, Appian scores 8.4 to Pega's 8.2. Source [11]
Where Kinetic is different
Appian is strong in government. Here is where we differ.
Appian Government Cloud holds FedRAMP High and a DoD IL5 provisional authorization.[5][6] If your program needs a vendor-operated cloud with those authorizations, Appian has them. Kinetic takes the other route: customers install it in their own GovCloud or on-premises environment and issue the ATO, and it runs with ATOs in DoD IL4 and IL5 environments today.
Kinetic’s government case is different. It is deployed in DoD IL5 environments, such as Army INSCOM’s recruiting portal, and it runs customer-managed or on air-gapped networks with CAC/PIV sign-in. That fits programs that want the software inside their own environment, and AI models running on the same network.
Licensing that doesn’t count people
Appian licenses per user, per app, across three tiers, and meters AI in tokens per month.[7] For a known group of staff using a few applications, that is easy to plan. For a resident portal, or a process that touches every employee once a year, the count of users and apps is what makes it hard. Kinetic is priced on consumption, with nothing per user.
Building on the record, not next to it
Appian’s data fabric brings data from other systems into Appian applications.[1] Kinetic takes a plainer route: each workflow reads from and writes to the system of record directly. Both approaches avoid a big migration. Which suits you depends on whether you want a unified data model inside the platform or none at all.
Which to choose
Choose Appian when
- You want a vendor-operated cloud that already holds FedRAMP High and an IL5 provisional authorization.
- You're consolidating many process applications onto one platform and want its data fabric at the center.
- Your users are a known number of licensed staff, so per-user, per-app pricing is predictable.
Choose Kinetic when
- The deployment has to be customer-managed or air-gapped, with AI on a model you host.
- Users include residents, clients or contractors, and per-user pricing would grow with every one of them.
- You want each new application to read and write the system of record directly, with nothing to sync.
- You'd rather start with one portal or process than a platform program.
USDA National Information Technology Center
3 weeks to 30 minutes
USDA's NITC built a self-service provisioning catalog on Kinetic in front of vSphere, Active Directory and its cloud platforms. Its proof of concept took four days, and more than 75% of its business and service functions now run automatically.

-
Is Kinetic an alternative to Appian?
For portals and processes built on systems you plan to keep, yes. If you want a single vendor-run platform with FedRAMP High and an IL5 provisional authorization already in place, Appian has those and Kinetic does not claim them.
-
Is Kinetic IL5 authorized like Appian?
No. Kinetic is deployed in DoD IL5 environments, for example at Army INSCOM, and supports CAC/PIV sign-in. That describes where Kinetic runs, not an authorization Kinetic holds. Appian Government Cloud holds an IL5 provisional authorization from DISA.
-
How does licensing compare?
Appian licenses per user, per app, in three tiers, with AI metered in tokens. Kinetic charges by consumption, not by user or app. Neither of us publishes dollar figures.
-
Both platforms talk about deterministic workflows. What's the real difference?
There isn't much of one on that point, and Appian has an analyst ranking for it. The differences are deployment (Kinetic runs air-gapped and customer-managed), model choice (any model, including one you host) and licensing without per-user fees.
-
Can Kinetic connect to Appian?
Yes, through Appian's APIs. Some customers keep an existing Appian application and build new portals or cross-system workflows on Kinetic alongside it.
