The systems hold the data. The experience is where you’re losing
Most large organizations don’t have a system-of-record problem. They have a system-of-engagement problem. The ERP works. The HRMS, the ITSM tool, the CRM, the finance and control systems — they hold the data, enforce the rules, and run the transactions they were built to run. The pain isn’t in those systems. A system of engagement is built for the people doing the work — customers, partners, employees. It is where someone makes a request, checks a status, approves a step, or gets something done. It is supposed to be flexible, fast, and focused on the task at hand, pulling data from the systems of record without forcing the user to know or care where that data lives.
The trap most organizations fall into is treating these as the same thing. They customize the system of record until it groans, bolting experience requirements onto a transactional engine that was never meant to carry them. Every change means touching core code. Every core change means risk, cost, and a longer dependency on a single vendor’s roadmap.
Your systems of record were built to hold the truth, not to deliver the experience. Stop asking them to do both.
